Canary Care and Information

Canaries are cheerful, active birds best known for their beautiful song and bright colouring. They are generally more independent than many companion parrots, making them a popular choice for people who enjoy watching and listening to their birds without frequent handling. Male canaries are usually the strongest singers, although every bird has its own personality and vocal habits.

A healthy diet should include a quality canary seed mix, supported by appropriate fresh leafy greens and vegetables. Fresh food should be washed thoroughly and removed before it spoils. Clean drinking water must be available at all times and replaced daily, particularly during warmer South Australian weather.

Canaries need enough cage space to fly between perches, as regular movement supports their physical health. Perches of different safe sizes and textures can help exercise their feet, while suitable canary accessories provide variety and stimulation. Avoid overcrowding the cage, as canaries benefit from clear flying space.

Place the cage in a bright, well-ventilated area away from draughts, kitchen fumes and prolonged direct sunlight. Canaries also need a regular sleep routine and a quiet, dark environment overnight. Monitor your bird for changes in singing, appetite, droppings, breathing, feather condition or activity, and contact an avian veterinarian if you notice anything unusual.
