Budgie Care and Information

Budgerigars, commonly known as budgies, are friendly, intelligent birds that can make wonderful companions. They are naturally social and thrive when given regular interaction, mental stimulation and enough room to move, climb and stretch their wings. Budgies can also learn to mimic sounds and words, particularly when handled gently and spoken to regularly.

A balanced diet plays an important role in keeping your budgie healthy and active. Their daily food should include a quality budgie seed mix, along with suitable fresh vegetables and leafy greens. Seed should be stored in a cool, dry place and replaced regularly to keep it fresh. Clean drinking water should always be available and changed each day.

Budgies are active birds that enjoy exploring, chewing and playing. Providing safe bird toys and accessories can help prevent boredom and encourage natural behaviours. Toys should be rotated occasionally to maintain interest, while worn or damaged items should be removed promptly.

Their cage should be positioned away from draughts, direct afternoon sun, kitchen fumes and sudden temperature changes. Regular cleaning, suitable perches and a calm sleeping environment will help support your budgie’s comfort and wellbeing. Changes in appetite, droppings, breathing, posture or activity levels should be assessed promptly by an avian veterinarian.
